Grades PreK-4 • Jersey City, New Jersey
Fourth graders at P.S. #29 are privileged to be able to attend the lunchtime Chess Club. By learning the sophisticated strategies of chess, students enhance their higher-order thinking skills, learn patience, and increase their ability to concentrate. During the first month of the year, all fourth graders are invited to participate, though the number is limited to ten students per meeting so that the teacher may provide individualized attention while they learn the rules. To be successful, students must engage in problem solving and take time to figure out the best move while also observing the moves of their opponent. When facing a more skilled player, students are encouraged to see the game as a learning experience. In these ways, students develop better impulse control and tolerance of frustration. Even after the game, victorious students support those who may be upset about losing. In time, the students become more independent in referencing the rules, consulting one another rather than the teacher. Enthusiasm for the game does not end with the school day, however. Many parents acknowledge that their children are eager to teach them how to play.
