Character Kick-Off Day

Teachers and staff at Lawrence Intermediate School prepare their students for a grant-funded “Character Kick-Off Day” by assigning each class a character trait. Students brainstorm about their character trait and then create a symbol of their trait on a four foot flag. These flags decorate school hallways all year and serve as reminders of the importance of students’ chosen character traits. Traits include working together, communicating, showing respect, honesty, friendship, and courtesy. Sixty high school peer leaders, one-hundred staff members and twenty-five parent volunteers receive training to help students design their flags and then prepare for the special school event. At this event, students complete mental and physical challenges as a class. These challenges teach students how to work together by using the strengths of individual students for the purpose of earning the best score for their entire class. Students have shown enthusiasm for this special day dedicated to character education.
