Ollie E. Culbreth, Jr. School (P.S. #14)
Open Day-Open School
Each Friday at Ollie E. Culbreth, Jr. School has been designated as Open Day––School Day. Parents are encouraged to participate, as they can, in sharing in their child’s learning experiences. School activities involving parents have grown from field trips to reading explorations. Parents have a chance to see with new eyes the challenges of education in the 21st century. Students have shown great pride that their parents value their education, and are making meaningful connections between home and community. Teachers have also benefitted from these friendly, positive, and collegial interactions with parents. The program has broken down barriers of both heritage and language, and has provided teachers with a chance to have meaningful conversation with parents, adult to adult, about educational issues, not just student problems. As parents gain ownership over Open Day––School Day, they begin to see the school as a friendly place to be. Since the program started, student attendance and behavior have noticeably improved.
