From Tee to Green and Beyond

At Greenwood School’s after-school program, participating fourth- and fifth-grade students receive academic tutoring and homework help and participate in other recreational/movement activities. On Mondays, the First Tee Gold Program offers discussion of life skills (core values), which are very similar to the school’s six pillars of character. Each weekly lesson begins with a discussion of the core value word of the night (ex. Responsibility, Good Sportsmanship, etc.), its meaning and implications at home, at school, and as part of golf instruction. Students are then taught their new golf skill, given time to practice their new skill in groups, and then meet for a final discussion of the new core value at the end of the session. Students who best exemplify that core value that day receive golf tees. Students and staff reflect on the activities at the end of the course. Staff has notice improved cooperation and better relationships, increased student support for each other, and applause for great shots. Good sportsmanship, courtesy, and respect have become the norm rather than the exception.
