Grades K-8 • Jersey City, New Jersey
A district demonstration site for the Jersey City Public Schools, Fred W. Martin School uses research-based methods to integrate character education into students' everyday school lives. Teachers are given the option of incorporating Learning to Give lessons, which consist of supplemental academic and skill development activities that focus on philanthropy, into their regular instruction. To reinforce the ideals of service and citizenship that are advocated in the classroom lessons, however, children participate in the school's Community League program. The program provides a framework of annual events for students to attend, encouraging their participation by awarding Community League points for regular student turnout. Over forty student leaders make up the Community League; these leaders serve as class representatives at weekly meetings and endeavor to motivate other students to give of their time, talents, and service for the welfare of the community. Since the implementation of the Community League program, over $1,500 has been raised by students, who demonstrate their commitment and interest in the initiative by their unfailing 100% attendance rates. By connecting members of the school and community in service, the practice has cultivated a student body that is eager to help others.
