Radix Elementary School
Pillow Project
![]() |
Caring, compassion, and friendship were encompassed in this service project to make pillows for patients receiving chemotherapy. Students learned all aspects of making the pillow and attached a small hand-stitched heart that read, “We really put our hearts into it!” The reality of the patients’ illness was brought to life for the volunteers when they made visits to the Cancer Shelter to deliver the pillows, instilling a stronger sense of purpose and pride for their service. The students were moved to learn that people suffer from cancer at all ages. In response to this emotional event, students continued to correspond with the patients through written notes of thanks and thoughts. The results of this project, from sewing to delivery to reflection, were not only displayed on a bulletin board at school, but also on the faces of the young students involved when they realized their potential as important contributors to the community. This is a hands-on project that inspires children to use their abilities to help those in need.
