Taking part in a joint project of Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network and Kids Can Free the Children, fifth-grade students were selected to become “O Ambassadors” and develop their own unique program called P.A.N.D.A. Materials provided by Free the Children, including lessons about poverty, education, and sustainable development of youth in East Asia, raised awareness for this team of 25 students before they opened a school store where all proceeds benefited children in need. Their cooperative efforts for the store led to important opportunities to exercise critical thinking, decision making, and demonstrate ethical values toward each other. The students exercised core ethical values as they gained a sense of belonging to their school community, as well as the global community. Throughout the year, the group tracked their progress on their online profile found on www.oambassadors.org and entered reflections on their monthly activities. This practice allowed students to meet real needs, but beyond that it provided an opportunity to develop good character relationships across nations.
