Wild fires in California inspired second graders when they identified with the children who were suffering personal loss and hardship. Beginning with a class meeting, students began to discuss the difference between needs and wants, and expressed a strong desire to raise funds for the many Californians in need. As a result of planning during class and recess, their ideas evolved into the creation of a fundraising fair to include games, crafts, baked goods, and flea market items, making a strong connection to their second grade unit on money. Students were responsible for counting their collections and recording the amounts in teacher-made “bank books.” The fair, held on a Saturday, was the culminating event. As a result of their hard work, students counted $1,965 and with the help of a local bank, had a check issued for the American Red Cross. Through teamwork and cooperation, these young volunteers gathered support from the school community to make their vision a reality.
