Race for Respect

Students and staff at Yardville School plan and participate in a character education kick-off program in October of every school year, reminding the students of the six pillars of character and the necessity of exhibiting good character at all times and in all settings. Each year’s theme is different. Past themes have included a “Freedom Assembly” focusing on citizenship, a “Bounce Out Bullying” program, and a “Race for Respect.” Three-hundred fifty students from all grades participated in the “Race for Respect” in 2006. Students watched a game show presented by fifth grade peer leaders in a short assembly. The game show focused on character education themes, included a cheer about respect, and was followed by the races themselves. The eight different races focused on respect for people with disabilities, personal space, property, and the environment as well as the importance of teamwork, taking turns, listening carefully to others, and choosing words carefully. Student discipline referral rates are low and staff retention is high at Yardville School.
