Young Ladies Club

Lincoln High School
Jersey City, New Jersey, USA

Lincoln High School started the Young Ladies Club where female teachers mentor teen girls through their transitions into adulthood. In contrast to the media’s projection of mixed messages about the worth and role of women, the Young Ladies Club promotes leadership skills and encourages the students to set high goals for themselves. Each girl is expected to continue her education beyond high school and is taught that education is the key to empowerment. In addition to weekly meetings, the group has three major events during the year: a multicultural event highlighting the work and lives of women from different cultures; a volunteer or community involvement event; and a leadership camp that focuses on team building, leadership development, and appreciation for nature and outdoor skills. These events have enabled the female students and teachers to come together as partners to celebrate their heritage of leadership and to help discover the leaders within themselves. Since its inception, all the girls in the Young Ladies Club have applied to college or another post-secondary institution.
