Descriptions:

Teacher opens the discussion on the important role of the military in defending our nation and elicits from the students physical and emotional difficulties the soldier must endure. Students then "adopt" a soldier stationed overseas. Students will write weekly letters and send a care package once a month. Students will also calculate the cost of mailing letters and packages.

Project Description:

Teacher opens the discussion on the important role of the military in defending our nation and elicits from the students physical and emotional difficulties the soldier must endure. Students then "adopt" a soldier stationed overseas. Students will write weekly letters and send a care package once a month. Students will also calculate the cost of mailing letters and packages.

Timeline:
October 2006 until May 2007
Project Scheduling:

During English class; various times throughout the year

Equipment Needed:

Paper, envelopes, stamps, boxes, care package supplies

Academic Focus:

Language Arts: Students will work on their language arts skills (writing, punctuation, spelling and grammar) through writing letters once a week to our soldier.

Mathematics: They will work on their calculation skills by figuring out the total cost of this project.

Social Studies: Students will practice good citizenship

Consumer, Family & Life Skills: Students demonstrate self-management skills and also character education skills.

Core Ethical Values: Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Empathy, Citizenship, and Caring

Hurdles Encountered:

Hurdle: Students losing the motivation to write to our soldier.

 

Solution: Read letters and emails that the soldier has written back to the students.

Interdisciplinary Approach:  Linking language arts and mathematics through a character education project.

Personal Growth Outcomes:

Specifically, students will learn the value of respect, compassion, pride in our country and citizenship through this project. They will also learn to have empathy for someone who must be away from his family through holidays.

Recognition: A list of soldier recipients and the student writers will be posted in the hall. 

Key Findings: Student reflections will indicate the success of the project.  Also, responses from soldiers will show the effect on them.

 
 
 
 
 
 
Community Involvement:

Service members in our community will be recognized with a bulletin board in the school. We will include our service member and our students’ pictures in the bulletin board.

Question and answer, journal writing, letter writing and student participation in the project.
