A class discussion on the importance of having a role model at a critical time serves as the springboard to this project. The students will create an essay describing a role model who is in their life today. It must be someone they interact with on a regular basis. If the student does not have a role model he or she will write an essay on the value of role models in today’s society. Students will invite their role model to a breakfast held in the school café and honor them with their essays.

Solution: We helped them to brainstorm about character traits they see in themselves and other people. Celebration: Breakfast held in the lower café where the students bring their role model. |
Project Description:
A class discussion on the importance of having a role model at a critical time serves as the springboard to this project. The students will create an essay describing a role model who is in their life today. It must be someone they interact with on a regular basis. If the student does not have a role model he or she will write an essay on the value of role models in today’s society. Students will invite their role model to a breakfast held in the school café and honor them with their essays. Target Audience: The community of Egg Harbor Township Timeline: Two weeks to complete essay.
Project Scheduling: During class time; additional time for planning use of facilities and contacting food service for the breakfast. Equipment Needed:
Decorated paper for final essay. Supplies and donations for the breakfast. Supplies and paper for invitations. Academic Focus: Language Arts Literacy: The following skills are involved in the discussion, writing, sharing and presenting essays: 3.1 Reading (b, c, d, e, f, g); 3.2 Writing (a, b, c, d)’ 3.3 Speaking (a, b, c, d) Technology: Students will be formatting their papers using a word processing program. Students will visit the computer lab and print their essay on decorative paper. Students will use a word processing program to create and design invitations to be mailed to their role model.
Consumer, Family, and Life Skills: Students will work cooperatively to learn the value of respect, responsibility, accountability, and commitment to the community. The activities build a sense of character and self esteem.
Educational Strategies:
Students will be able to write reflectively to generate a personal essay on the value of a role model. Students will be able to identify characteristics of a role model, recognize their personal role model, and express an experience they shared with their role model. Students will be able to actively engage in the peer review process. Students will locate areas of their essay in need of improvement including organization, structure, grammar, punctuation, and coherence. Students will be able to revise their essay and resubmit it for final printing. Students will be able to work cooperatively to create authentic invitations for their role model. Students will be able to assemble and mail invitations, and record responses. Students will be able to organize the production of the breakfast. Personal Growth Outcomes:
Students will recognize the value of a role model and that it is important to believe in positive thinking. They will also recognize traits about themselves that will help establish self esteem. The idea is that these students can mentor younger students next year. |

Recognition: Students received “thank you” notes from the individuals honored as well as many organizations. Media coverage. Key Findings: Students enthusiastically participated in this project, working hard to perfect their craft. The reflections are outstanding. |
Community Involvement:
Parents and Volunteer Involvement: Role models selected from the community will be invited to the high school to attend a breakfast. Invitations will also be mailed to the vocal ensemble, inviting them to volunteer to perform at the breakfast. Reflection Activities: Reflection activities will take place at the end of the project. Reflections will link to, respect and pride, self esteem and character values. .
