Project Description: Alerting the deaf/hard-of-hearing students in case of an emergency or lock-down drill can be a formidable task. The deaf students at PCTI in collaboration with a hearing sign language class, graphic arts department, security, school resource officers, and the local police, developed Project Alert, a way of recognizing and dealing with deaf students during such an emergency.
Students interviewed law enforcement officers and came up with 5 signs that school security and police offers should know in the event of an emergency. The deaf students worked with the graphic arts department to create posters and wallet size cards for the officers and security. Students went to the local academy and presented the information to the cadets. Students also went to several local schools that have deaf programs and educated their students and staff about what to do in the event of a lock-down or actual emergency.
