2009 New Jersey Schools of Character

Lincoln School/Newark: 2009 NJSOC Honorable Mention

L to R: Joyce Powell-President, NJEA, Kay Pollard-School Social Worker, Joe Mazzola-Executive Director, CEP

The cornerstone of Lincoln School's character education initiative is a program entitled SHINE. SHINE is based on the belief that every day each student has the opportunity to let the best in them shine through. Lincoln’s SHINE program offers an opportunity for children to cultivate positive values that build on strengths, and encourage a world view that is inherently good, right, and empowering. Lincoln School also implements the six pillars of character education and other important traits such as cooperation, self-discipline, friendship and positive-attitudes, with the goal to have these traits become an integral part of the Lincoln School culture. Lincoln School provides a safe haven where students learn that there are alternatives to negative behavior and destructive choices.
