2010 New Jersey Schools of Character

Joseph J. Catena Elementary School: New Jersey Schools of Character

Character development at Joseph J. Catena School began in 2001 with the Character Counts Program. Today’s program reflects a philosophical change in thinking and goals. In order to develop character, staff provides daily opportunities for thinking, feeling, and practicing within an environment of high academic achievement. Through school-wide service learning projects, students have the opportunity to participate in highly engaging, meaningful projects that connect directly to curriculum. Students learn about service to others along with the principles of good character  throughout their school day. The rewards they receive are defined not only by academic achievement, but by their enhanced self esteem and knowing that they have helped their community.

“This year, my class did a service learning project. We made blankets to give to sick children at CentraState Hospital and the Deborah Hospital. We made blankets for the children so they can be cozy and feel good. When I worked on this project, I felt really happy that I helped sick children and made them feel better. It felt great when I donated the blankets.” – Alyssa, 3rd grade student at JJCS
