2010 New Jersey Schools of Character

Lopatcong Township Middle School: Honorable Mention

Lopatcong Township Middle
School’s character education goals,
core beliefs, and hopes for their
students are best articulated in our
district’s mission statement.  Student
attitudes and behaviors, and staff and parent involvement in the school and community best exemplify how those words are put into practice.  The goal of our Character Education Program  is to provide opportunities for students to model and demonstrate the personal and social development skills that they have learned. This is demonstrated by showing respect for and acceptance of others; by exhibiting self-sufficiency, self-worth
and self-determination; and by anticipating and accepting consequences for one’s own actions.  The expectation is that Lopatcong Township Middle School students will transfer those learned skills into their adult lives.
“Character education at Lopatcong helped all of us become better people. We're able to be ourselves at a place where we spend much of our time. Through our lessons, we  learn to be better people in the world. We learn what's good to have in our character. One of the best impacts it has given us is the ability to make friends easily. Now, we are able to overlook small problems and establish more friendships... In the end, what we learn now is the outline to who[m] we will be in the future, and with our base set, we can only get better.” – Brenda Hernandez, 8th Grade Student/ Student Council President
