2010 New Jersey Schools of Character
Matthew Jago #28 School: Honorable Mention
The shareholders in the Matthew Jago School Community believe that the goal of character education is to engage the entire community in their effort to provide a learning environment that fosters inter-dependence, embraces change, and values diversity. They recognize that their school population is comprised of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and varied abilities. Character education is emphasized and infused in every aspect of the school; from the physical building to the academic programs. The hallways boast hand-painted street signs named after the Core Character Education Values, such as “Responsibility Way” and “Respect Railroad”. Teachers and school staff use every opportunity during the day to reinforce character values through examples, teachable moments, and structured learning situations. They believe that by
providing students with the security of a safe, caring, trustworthy environment in which
to learn, academic success is attainable for all.
"The Character Education Program at Matthew Jago School has focused our school population around a sense of ‘community’ where the personal character traits and the civic virtues of each individual works to create a school culture where everyone models and reinforces positive life choices." - Mr. Robert Patten, Principal
