2010 New Jersey Schools of Character

New York Avenue School: Honorable Mention

New York Avenue School (NYAS) plays a direct and influential role in shaping the
personal values and ethics of our students. We serve an increasingly diverse body of
students who enter a nurturing community of learners, educators, and support staff. Lessons are taught not only in classrooms, but also in state-of-the-art computer labs, art and music rooms, athletic fields, on stage, and at in-school Science and Art Fairs.  These lessons inspire confidence while inculcating a sense of responsibility to self and others.  They offer a myriad of extracurricular activities that directly impact student motivation and behavior, which are in alignment with the school’s vision of becoming “A haven of hope, a center of transformation and an epicenter of change.”
“Character Education has greatly impacted our school.  Not only has it impacted our school, but the whole community.  Our students are taking pride in the traits that are presented to them each month.  All of us that are a part of this learning community, including administrators, teachers, aides, nurse, secretaries, and cafeteria workers, take character education as a priority.  We are dedicated to developing young people of good character who  become responsible and caring citizens.  Effective character education supports our school goals, as well as, promotes learning.”- Atiba Rose, Vice Principal
