2010 New Jersey Schools of Character
Sayreville Public School District: Emerging District of Character

environment. Our District utilizes two character education programs to aid in this mission. First is the “Character Counts! program”, which is built on the “Six Pillars of Character”. The second program is the “Fish for Schools Philosophy”, which is based on four principles: “be there”, “play”, “make their day”, and “choose your attitude”. Utilizing these two programs, district staff provide opportunities for the entire district community to demonstrate core values by modeling these values in their interactions with student, parents and guardians, colleagues and the community.
“Researchers have found out that kind thoughts, words and deeds can help us stay healthy. These kindnesses have a positive effect on the body’s immune system, our first line of defense against disease. It produces health benefits very similar to those produced from exercise programs. Character Education exemplifies kind works and deeds. What a proactive way to stay healthy without being expensive innature!!”- Sandy McCormack, Guidance Counselor and Character Education Coordinator
