Project Memorial
After being told the inspirational stories of three hometown WWI and Korean War veterans, all recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, students in an Honors International Relations class at Audubon Junior/Senior High decided to act. Deciding these men and their values should be honored with a memorial on school grounds, students first contacted the families of the medal recipients to research their military careers and citations. They then laid out the design for the memorial and made construction decisions. Several fundraisers, including athletic contests, direct mailings, spaghetti dinners, and a “buy a brick” event supported efforts to erect a memorial that would provide a lasting example of distinguished moral character for generations to come. The monument was completed in 1993, but Project Memorial lives on as a non-profit organization with the goals of maintaining the monument, promoting awareness of the three medal recipients and other veterans in the community, and creating a scholarship for a graduating senior with career plans in community service. Each year, four or five students are chosen to serve on the Project Memorial committee, maintaining the pride, excellence, and character building that is the keystone of this ongoing project.
