As a response to students’ concerns about “four-letter words” and other inappropriate language, Lincoln High School’s Student Council initiated the Watch Your Mouth Campaign. The students wanted everyone, including all faculty and staff, to understand that when you open your mouth and say things without thinking, the results can be devastating. After collecting facts about cursing, students initiated Phase 1 of their program, consisting of posters hung around the school that contained impressive and inspirational statements regarding offensive language. Teachers also infused awareness about offensive language into their curriculum in relevant ways. Phase 2 of the program parallels the “Got Milk” campaign, and features photographs of different students, staff, and faculty on posters with their own reflections on offensive language highlighted. Being asked to be on a poster has become quite an honor around the school, and students have begun to use the phrase “Watch Your Mouth” regularly when offensive language arises.
