Get in the Know about CO

The goal of this service-learning campaign is to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Students and staff initiated this project as a result of the death of one of their own students, making their efforts a meaningful and relevant endeavor. The staff has been taking steps to integrate the campaign within the academic program. Research on the properties of carbon monoxide and its effects led to the implementation of surveys in social studies. Math students used the data to estimate funds required to carry out their plan. Language Arts students wrote letters to public officials and community leaders requesting support. Multimedia and art students spread the word through advertisements and informative PowerPoint presentations. Each learning experience is leading to the culminating event to distribute carbon monoxide detectors to all Jackson households. Through this coordinated approach, the project increases respect and empathy among those involved. Success is demonstrated in its continued growth, as residents of Jackson, the Jackson Police Department, Fire Department, Rotary, and Optimist Club, and many others have joined the effort to meet their goal.
