Woodcrest Elementary School
Grades K–5 • Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Woodcrest Elementary School offers Moving Day on the last day of school as an opportunity for teachers to get upcoming students acquainted with their new classrooms for the upcoming year. Woodcrest believes that when students have the opportunity to meet and spend time with their new teacher, they feel happier and more confident about starting school. On Moving Day, Woodcrest teachers engage students in icebreaker games, character and community building activities, and personal goal setting for the upcoming school year. Teachers may also introduce curriculum, share exciting upcoming events, and field student questions. Each teacher may conduct Moving Day a bit differently, but all have the same goals in mind: to lessen student anxiety; create positive feelings; and present a bright outlook. Through Moving Day, teachers hope to give students a sense of belonging right from the start. Moving Day reinforces the belief that if students must show good character at all times, so must teachers. It helps foster Woodcrest as a positive, successful, and meaningful place highly valued as part of the character education initiative.
