PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

"Since 1976, the mission of Lesson One has been to help children and adults take control of their lives. We teach children fundamental life skills in the same sequential and straightforward way that the alphabet and numbers are taught. Through Lesson One, children are able to tangibly define, experience, and share skills of self-control, self-confidence, responsibility, thinking and problem-solving, and cooperation. The program has been translated into book form published by Simon & Schuster entitled Lesson One: The ABCs of Life. The book has received endorsements from Bill Cosby, Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Childrens Defense Fund, Dr. James Comer of Yale University, Dr. Alvin Poussaint of Harvard University, among others. Lesson One has appeared on Dateline, World News Tonight, Parade, and has been a model program at the White House. Lesson One defines the program skills in terms that children and adults can understand and internalize. Then it provides children with an experience that will give them a point of reference for what it is like to use each skill. Lesson One also gives adults and children the chance to share how they use the skills. This affords children and adults the opportunity to learn from each other and shows children how universal the skills are, because adults need the skills just as much as children do. The combination of defining, experiencing, and sharing Lesson One helps children internalize the skills for success both socially and academically. For more information, see the Lesson One website, www.lessonone.org."
